Genesis Project

The School of Abraham Genesis Project is free, and open to everyone, everywhere. Originally we offered this as a Summer Project in 2001. We had such a positive response that we have made the Genesis Project an ongoing study that families may participate in at any time. Parents will be responsible for overseeing the progress of the project, and will validate all work completed for the Return and Report certificate request.
Enjoy the project!

Instructions

Parents: The School of Abraham Genesis Project presents a unique opportunity for your child to successfully complete a meaningful, significant assignment that has a strong spiritual foundation and an important message. The complete project is suggested for children ages nine and up. Younger children are strongly encouraged to participate, with parental help. There is no charge for this program.

All Certificates of Achievement will be awarded based on “Return and Report” notifications submitted through our web site.

Topics Covered

The topics covered are the Premortal, Mortal, and Post-Mortal Ministries of Christ, based on Special Witnesses of Christ (Ensign, Apr. 2001, 4). Special Witnesses of Christ is the text from a video presentation by the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The presentation was broadcast by satellite between general conference sessions on 1-2 April 2000. There are 18 separate presentations in this compilation. (Click here for the text version, click here for .pdf format, click here to order the video).

The assignment is for the student to copy one of these testimonies for every two years of their age into a personal journal, and the Intro Pages. (For instance, if the child is 12 years old, they would need to copy at least six of the testimonies into their journal). The goal is that by writing and pondering these words, the child will record not only in his journal but in his heart the conviction and faith of the Apostles and Prophets, and will be able in the future to refer to these words. Spelling, handwriting, grammar, history, geography, scripture application, memorization, and discipline will also be included through completion of the project, the Second Mile and Extra Bonus activities. Parents, too, are encouraged to complete the project, along with their children. The best teaching occurs by example.

Ideas for Younger Children

Younger children may participate by watching and discussing the video with you, (take note of the locations and special religious significance of each location, and discuss these with your child). They can focus on writing their choice of three or more of the testimonies. They can also participate in the Second Mile Activities. You should read all the testimonies yourself, and discuss with each of your children those words which touch you the most personally, and tell why. Parents may want to address younger and older children separately, or may speak with each child one-on-one in a private setting.

Parents should discuss with each of their children the significance and privilege of a having this special collection of Apostolic Testimonies of Christ. Have your children consider how the church would be different if we did not have such testimony by which to guide our lives. Consider with them how the world would be different without the testimony of these men. Record your feelings and thoughts in your personal journal. (Click here to see 2 Nephi 1:10 and Mosiah 1:5)

How to participate

Then, copy the written testimony of the Special Witnesses of Christ into your personal journal (one testimony for each two years of age). The testimonies may be written in any order, the writing of the testimonies must be completed to qualify for a Certificate of Recognition from the School of Abraham.

The goal is that by writing and pondering these words, you will record not only in your journal but in your heart the conviction and faith of the Apostles and Prophets, and you will be able in the future to refer to these words.

We encourage you to complete the Second Mile and Extra Bonus activities in addition to the Genesis Project. Then, when you have completed the activities, tell us by clicking on the “Return and Report” email link. School of Abraham will issue Certificates of Achievement to all those completing the program.

Second Mile Activity

Each of the speakers in the video Special Witnesses of Christ spoke from a different location.

1. Locate on a map or globe each of the various locations they spoke from, and show these places to your parents, a friend, or your sibling, using the map or globe.

2. Find out as many reasons as you can why these locations are significant religiously. Record these in your journal.

3. Record in your journal other special religious events that have occurred at these locations. Hint: Look in the scriptures, the Bible Dictionary, in a Church History book, or the Church Almanac for more information.

4. Share what you learned with your parents, a friend, or siblings.

5. Record your observations and findings in your journal along with the testimonies you transcribed.

Younger children may receive credit for the Second Mile Activity by working with an older sibling or parent, as long as (1) the parent feels that the child has learned new information from the experience, and (2) the child is able to communicate to another person what they have learned (see item 4, above). The parent can assist the child with the journal entries.

Extra Bonus

Younger children should choose and memorize their choice of at least four of the scriptures mentioned throughout the text. They should (1) write these verses in their journals, and (2) recite them to their parents and sibling(s), including a brief explanation which shows their understanding of the meaning of each of the verses.

Older children should memorize the text of their favorite “special witness testimony” and recite it formally and in a serious setting with their family. Dress clothes are suggested for the occasion.

Application for older children and parents: Discuss together the significance and privilege of a having this special collection of Apostolic Testimonies of Christ. Why might it be important to record these things in a journal? Consider how the church would be different if we did not have such testimony by which to guide our lives. Consider how the world would be different without the testimony of these men. Record your feelings and thoughts in your journal.
