President Hinckley says our children should memorize at least one scripture per week.  Do you accept the challenge?

"May I suggest that in our family night gatherings we make it a project to memorize one scripture citation a week pertinent to this work. At the conclusion of a year our children will have on their lips a fund of scripture which will remain with them throughout their lives."

"In the future, infrequent family scripture study may be inadequate to arm our children with the virtue necessary to withstand the moral decay of the environment in which they will live.  Where in the world will the children learn chastity, integrity, honesty, and basic human decency if not at home?

"These values will, of course, be reinforced at church, but parental teaching is more constant.  In my opinion, the teaching, rearing, and training of children requires more intelligence, intuitive understanding, humility, strength, wisdom, spirituality, perseverance, and hard work than any other challenge we might have in life.  This is especially so when moral foundations of honor and decency are eroding around us.  To have successful homes, values must be taught, and there must be rules, there must be standards, and there must be absolutes...."

(James E. Faust, "The Greatest Challenge In The World- Good Parenting", General Conference, October 1990; see Ensign, Nov 1990, p. 33)

"Your commitment to teach the precious children of our Father in Heaven is not alone the long hours you spend in preparation for each class, nor the many hours of fasting and prayer that you may become a more effective teacher. It is the commitment to a life every hour of which is purposefully lived in compliance with the teachings and example of the Savior and of his servants. It is a commitment to constant striving to be evermore spiritual, evermore devoted, evermore deserving to be the conduit through which the Spirit of the Lord may touch the hearts of those you are trusted to bring to a greater understanding of his teachings".
("Four Fundamentals for Those Who Teach and Inspire Youth,"
in Old Testament Symposium Speeches, 1987, 1)

School of Abraham encourages parents to incorporate daily scripture study, not just reading, from the earliest ages with their children.  Parents should give prayerful time to learning how to formulate thought-provoking questions for their children to ponder and answer.

Developing a Personal Plan for Studying the Gospel

School of Abraham recommends the use of commentaries and study guides for each of the standard works.  With personal research opportunities, the children learn to ponder and apply the scriptures.  They come to comprehend why the Lord instructed that "man shall not live by bread alone."

A Review by Marji Meyer

Highly recommended!

I cannot begin to tell the impact this book has had on my ability to deeply study and analyze the scriptures. Trying to learn the concepts presented in this book have been as challenging as trying to drink water from a barrel. This book is so full of spiritual insight and "tools" with which to further our study of the scriptures that when you read it, and apply what it teaches, your study of the scriptures will raise to a new and exciting level. I highly recommend "Scripture Study: Tools and Suggestions" to everyone. This is an excellent text for parents, teachers, and students to learn how to truly feast upon the word of God. Come, read and learn at the feet of a righteous scholar.

This book is so full of insights that you may have to take it in little bites and spend time to think about what he is saying. But I can promise you that the effort to digest and ponder what Brother Faulconer shares in this book is well worth the effort, and that by applying what is taught in "Scripture Study: Tools and Suggestions," your study of the scriptures will move beyond the superficial level to a deeper pondering and analysis of the Word of God.

"A profound love for the scriptures has led James E. Faulconer to put together the scripture study plan contained in Scripture Study: Tools and Suggestions. He has spent many years teaching the truths contained in the scriptures to students at Brigham Young University, and in this book he shares the techniques he has refined through personal study and through his work with students." (FARMS review)

From the book: "Rich scripture study is facilitated by tools and techniques that help us focus on what the scriptures can teach us. Faulconer discusses a helpful method and the purpose of outlining, an in-depth method of cross-referencing, how to ask cogent and thought-provoking questions about the scriptures, the benefits of using dictionaries and concordances, the relation between words and ideas apparent through rhetorical studies, and using the valuable reference tools in the LDS edition of the scriptures. He then provides sample notes developed using the study tools he describes to show how research and pondering can make scripture study even more meaningful."

Brother Faulconer describes a personal turning point in his study of the scriptures as a graduate student of philosophy at Pennsylvania State University. He studied with a Jewish professor the Old Testament for eight weeks. He began by wanting to read just the book of Genesis. His professor was amazed. The professor suggested that they study only chapter one. They made it through three chapters in their eight weeks together.

The author states: "My experience with this kind of scripture study came as a surprise to me, but its effect was profound." The ideas presented in this book will have a profound effect on you as a student of the scriptures, too.

The chapters include:

* Studying the Scriptures
* Outlining
* Asking Questions
* The LDS Edition of the Scriptures
* English Historical Dictionaries
* Cross-referencing
* Doing Bible Research without knowing Hebrew or Greek
* Finding connections through parsing (diagramming
* Rhetoric
* Context
* Sample study notes for Moroni 4
* Writing a Talk from Scripture
Appendix 1: Scripture and History
Appendix 2: Hebrew versus Greek Thinking

The author is dean of General Education and Honors at Brigham Young University, where he is professor of philosophy. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Pennsylvania State University. James E. Faulconer, 1999, 157 pp., softbound, FARMS.

To be valiant in the testimony of Jesus is to believe in Christ and his gospel with unshakable conviction. It is to know of the verity and divinity of the Lord's work on earth.

But this is not all. It is more than believing and knowing. We must be doers of the word and not hearers only. It is more than lip service; it is not simply confessing with the mouth the divine Sonship of the Savior. It is obedience and conformity and personal righteousness.

Basic Beliefs of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

During this stressful sojourn on this earth we should make no mistake about who we and others really are. Amid our budding possibilities, in the words of C. S. Lewis we are "In a society of possible Gods and Goddesses,. . . [in which] there are no ordinary people. [We] have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations--these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit."

"We are so wound up in programs and statistics and trends, in properties, lands and mammon, and in achieving goals that will highlight the excellence of our work, that we have omitted the weightier matters of the law. However talented men may be in administrative matters; however eloquent they may be in expressing their views; however learned they may be in the worldly things -- they will be denied the sweet whisperings of the Spirit that might have been theirs unless they pay the price of studying, pondering, and praying about the scriptures." (Bruce R. McConkie, Ensign May 1986, 81)
