Scripture Study

"Prepare yourselves
mentally. A mission requires a great deal of mental
preparation. You must memorize missionary discussions,
memorize scriptures, and often learn a new language. The
discipline to do this is learned in your early years."
President Ezra Taft Benson, April 1985 General
Conference

"I have discovered
that many times you don't fully understand a scripture
until you memorize it. And sometimes I have memorized a
passage because it seemed important and valuable to me-
then afterwards I discovered deeper meanings that I hadn't
even known were there.
"When you find a passage that particularly impresses you,
consider taking the time to commit it to memory, word
perfect. Then not only will you be able to remember it, but
you will probably grow in your understanding as well.
"But that's not all. By memorizing scripture you show the
Lord that you esteem his words to be of great value--and
then he will be more likely to speak to you and give you
more."
Elder Gene R. Cook, "Searching the
Scriptures", pg. 114

"As Bruce R. McConkie waited for [a] flight to be announced, he buried
himself in a book by a renowned New Testament scholar. He was delighted to
discover material by a sectarian scholar that constituted a marvelous
defense of Mormonism. As he boarded the flight he met Marion G. Romney, then
a member of the First Presidency. He said, "President Romney, I have got to
read this to you. This is good," and proceeded to share his newfound
treasure. When he was finished, President Romney said, "Bruce, I have to
tell you a story. A few years ago I found something that I thought was
remarkable written by one of the world’s great scholars. I read it to J.
Rueben Clark, and he said, ‘Look when you read things like that, and you
find that the world doesn’t agree with us, so what? And when you read
something like that and you find they are right on the mark and they agree
with us, so what?'"

"Scriptorian is a simple computer program designed
to help people learn scriptures faster, and help them
remember scriptures longer. Scriptorian is incredibly
customizable, and really allows you to tailor a
scripture-memorizing program that will work best for you.
"The program is built around a feature called a
"study list." The study list is your tool for the
other activities in Scriptorian. Starting either from
scratch, or using a predefined list (which can then be
modified to fit your needs) you can build a set of
scriptural passages that augments your personal study,
appeals to your special interests, or addresses your
individual needs. The "predefined" study lists
include all four years of seminary scripture mastery
scriptures, making Scriptorian ready-to-use for seminary
students and teachers. And if the whole family wants to use
Scriptorian, each member can have a perfectly customized
list with the scriptures they currently want to learn."
(Jason McDonald, PhD Candidate in Instructional Psychology
and Technology at BYU).

"May I suggest that in
our family night gatherings we make it a project to
memorize one scripture citation a week pertinent to this
work. At the conclusion of a year our children will have on
their lips a fund of scripture which will remain with them
throughout their lives."
(Conference Report, April 1959; Teachings of
Gordon B. Hinckley, p. 344; Gene R. Cook, Searching the
Scriptures: Bringing Power to Your Personal and Family Study,
p. 115). |

"I have a vision of thousands
of missionaries going into the mission field with hundreds
of passages memorized from the Book of Mormon so that they
might feed the needs of a spiritually famished world."
President Ezra Taft Benson, October 1988 General
Conference |
|
"...It is desirable
that our children should learn to memorize important
passages; such that will leave a strong impression upon
their lives; scriptural passages that they will use as
their guiding star; scriptural passages that will help to
form convictions in their minds of right and wrong;
scriptural passages that will bring conviction to their
hearts."
Elder Joseph M. Tanner, April 1901 General Conference |

"I suggest that you memorize
scriptures that touch your heart and fill your soul with
understanding. When scriptures are used as the Lord has
caused them to be recorded, they have intrinsic power that
is not communicated when paraphrased. Sometimes when there
is a significant need in my life, I review mentally
scriptures that have given me strength. There is great
solace, direction, and power that flow from the scriptures,
especially the words of the Lord."
Elder Richard G. Scott, October 1999 General
Conference
