"Rays of light stream down from the windows of heaven, warming the forest floor below. They rest upon one's being and take away the chill of darker hours. It is in quiet places and in simple ways that heaven's veil is parted for those who knock upon its door."  ~~Greg Olsen on the Sacred Grove painting~~

Introduction

"The art of Greg Olsen illuminates the soul and spirit of its subjects and uplifts the hearts and minds of its viewers. Olsen's diverse interests are deftly demonstrated in oil paintings that range from the realistic and historical to the whimsical. His luminous, delicate portraits capture not only his subjects' likeness, but their spirit as well. Landscapes of scenes from America and the world over reflect the perfect beauty of the mind's eye.

"As a child, Olsen often relied on his imagination for entertainment- as an adult, his imagination entertains us with paintings that depict the best and brightest memories of childhood.

"Born in 1958, Olsen was raised in a farming community in rural Idaho. His parents, artists themselves, recognized and encouraged his early love of drawing. Later, the devoted tutelage of a high school teacher cemented his affinity and enhanced his technical ability. After studying illustration at Utah State University, he was hired as an in-house illustrator in Salt Lake City, working on anything from murals and dioramas to simple paste-up. Two years later, he followed a friend's advice and began painting full time. Sales from his first show only just covered the cost of refreshments and invitations, but yielded the first of many commissions that were to come.

"His Biblical paintings, represented in religious temples in more than 20 countries around the world, and his work for the Pentagon and the National Collegiate Athletic Association required intensive research and strict attention to factual detail. While these historical paintings satisfy his desire to render works with a sense of permanence, his whimsical paintings afford him the freedom to transfer his imagination to canvas. When Olsen paints a tree house, he paints it the way the children climbing it imagine it to be- the simple boards and nails of reality become elaborate, majestic castles in the sky.

"Olsen's paintings are included in many corporate collections, including Mobil Corporation, Turner Broadcasting System, Westin Hotels, World Explorer Cruises and the American Cancer Society, as well as the Pentagon, the U.S. Forest Service and the State of Idaho. His works have been exhibited in prominent art galleries throughout the West and major one-man shows.

"Olsen's philosophy on art is quite simple. 'For me, I just always appreciated the beauty of art and the way it made me feel,' he says. 'Art's greatest purpose is just to make us happy. I take a lot of pleasure in painting and hope that pleasure is contagious to those who look at my art.'"

Gospel Art Picture Kit, Key Scriptures, and Music from the LDS Hymnal and the Children's Songbook

Greg Olsen has two pictures in the Gospel Art Picture Kit:  #215, Jesus Blessing Jairus's Daughter, and #326, The Bible and the Book of Mormon:  Two Witnesses.

#215 Jesus Blessing Jairus's Daughter.  Matthew 9:18-19, 23-25; Mark 5:22-24, 35-43; Luke 8:41-42, 49-56.

"Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him saying, fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise. And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway." Luke 8:50-55

Hymn #134 "I Believe in Christ"

Children's Songbook p.56 "I Think When I Read That Sweet Story"

#326 The Bible and the Book of Mormon: Two Witnesses. Ezekiel 37:16-19; 1 Nephi 13:23-42; 2 Nephi 3:12; Doctrine and Covenants 21:1; 27:5.

"And they shall come according to the words which shall be established by the mouth of the Lamb; and the words of the Lamb shall be made known in the records of thy seed, as well as in the records of the twelve apostles of the Lamb; wherefore they both shall be established in one; for there is one God and one Shepherd over all the earth. And the time cometh that he shall manifest himself unto all nations, both unto the Jews and also unto the Gentiles; and after he has manifested himself unto the Jews and also unto the Gentiles, then he shall manifest himself unto the Gentiles and also unto the Jews, and the last shall be first, and the first shall be last." 1 Nephi 13:41-41

Hymn #264, "Hark, All Ye Nations"

Children's Songbook p. 16, "Children All Over the World"

Study Suggestions

While only two of Greg Olsen's prints are in the current Gospel Art Picture Kit, it is not hard to find more elsewhere. Probably the easiest way to acquire several prints at once is to purchase one of his calendars. He has been producing these for at least the last three years.

Some of his popular calendar prints are:

"Then he took him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him." Luke 2:28-33

"I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; to open the blind eyes, to bring the prisoners from the prison,, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house." Isaiah 42:6-7.

And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbors, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance." Luke 15:4-7

"Hence many are called, but few are chosen." Doctrine and Covenants 121:40

"No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and be love unfeigned; by kindness and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guild- reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy; that he may know that thy faithfulness is stronger than the cords of death. Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distill upon thy soul as the dews from heaven. "Light to the Gentiles"

by Greg Olsen

also called "Simeon Reverencing the Christ Child"

This is perhaps my favorite painting by Greg Olsen. I have studied and pondered it for many years. I remember the first time I saw it in a gallery, the rich colors glowing and almost hovering in the air. It hangs in the Jordan River temple as you walk into the women's dressing room, and so has fed my mind and spirit in that place. One year we received it on a Christmas card from the First Presidency of the Church because of my husband's employment in the Temple Department. That card was so beautiful and dear that we hang it on our Christmas tree every year.

I love the promise of the baby. Babies are so wonderful, so fresh from God, so self-contained and sure of love. All babies are born of God, potential gods. But this little baby was to be the Messiah, the Savior of the World, a Light to the Gentiles, our Hope of Salvation. Mary knows it. Joseph knows it. Simeon knows it, and testifies of it. Simeon has waited and prayed for this privilege to see his Savior before he dies. Now he has come, calm, growing, full of peace, full of promise, like every baby, but set apart for a particular mission. What parent has not gazed into the face of their child as he slept and pondered their future? He, in fact, looks very much like my eldest son at that age.

Olsen uses composition, light, lines and colors to reinforce the themes of the painting. The baby is the center of light in the painting. All eyes look to Jesus. And yet, I would argue that the focal point of the painting may be the face of Mary. Her face is lit by reflected light from the Son of God. My eyes are drawn to her, her beauty, her dark hair and luminous face, full of peace and understanding. She is supported by Joseph, her husband, on one side and Simeon, the High Priest and prophet, on the other. Her red robe is the brightest color in the composition: red, the color of blood, of life and death, of future and past, of sacrifice, of strength, of royalty, of vibrancy, of love. White is for the baby in his purity and promise. White is also for Simeon in his holiness and faith. Brown for Joseph, connecting him to the earth, to practical, temporal matters. Joseph is strong, protective, gentle, understanding, watchful, grounded in his part of this drama. He holds the basket of sacrificial pigeons. They are the offering of a poor man, duty bound. One looks out at the viewer. "Do you understand that I am the sacrifice?" says the pigeon. "We know You are the Sacrifice, the Light and Hope of the World" testify the three caretakers of Jesus. The other figures watch from the shadows, "Yes, a beautiful baby," but don't fully understand.

There is rhythm in the curved, flowing lines of Joseph's shoulder and hand, Mary's cowl, Simeon's prayer shawl, that lead to the baby and then, back up to the absorbed faces. All heads are covered as if for prayer; the viewer is drawn into the moment of realization, awe and majesty. In the distance, over Mary's head, is a lighted doorway which suggests to me another world, the world Jesus has recently come from, the world to which he will lead us back after his time on this dark earth. The tiny robed figure in the doorway reminds me that Christ led Lazarus from his tomb; Christ himself rose again. He is the gatekeeper, waiting to lead us into life eternal, ready to light the way.
