OCTOBER, 2005
GENERAL CONFERENCE JEOPARDY
by Linda Harper

Directions:
I have the titles and #s on a board (for both sides)
I divide up my teams by who what how many sessions so they are as
even as
possible. (and also who remembers to bring notes to class).
Each team takes turns picking a category and points. The first team
that
answers (by ringing a bell or could stand up) gets the points and to
choose
the next category. Sometimes in the past if I have some that don't
participate, I rotate them between the team members so it's one on
one by
team members and if neither know the answer, open it up to the teams
in
general. You can have more than two or three teams depending on the
size of
your class.
For final jeopardy, before they get the question, they write down
how many
points they are trying for (if they miss the answer it is deducted).
Then I
ask the question and each team has to write down the answer. Whoever
gets
the answer rights gets points. That way many times its down to the
last
question before a team wins.
I know this is long and sometimes takes 1 1/2 to two days if you
want to
cover it in depth and some kids will add other things that
priesthood leader
spoke about too. I tried to do about two questions from each talk.
NOTE:
If they do not know the numbers, I let the teams try to guess and
the
closest team wins. Since I'm using scriptures from the Book of
Mormon if they get stumped on the answer, I will let them look up
the scriptures.
What's the subject?
100 Elder Faust told the story of an historic meeting in Jerusalem
17
years ago regarding lease for land of Jerusalem Center. Pres. Benson
and
BYU Pres. Jeffrey Holland agreed that our people would not proselyte
in
Israel in order to get the building permit to build that building
that
stands in Jerusalem. He said to our knowledge, the church and BYU
have
honorably kept that non proselytizing commitment. What did one of
our
Jewish friends remark that was the subject of his talk? He said, we
know
you will not proselyte, but what are you going to do about the light
that is
in their eyes.
200 Sister Tanner, the General YW Pres, said that Satan doesn't have
something we have and that is his punishment. What did she talk
about? The
sanctity of our bodies.
300 Elder Bateman talked about the dispensations that restored the
gospel
by prophets and were in place until the people rejected it in
apostasy. He
said that many of those dispensations were started with the giving
of a
book. He names several of those prophets who were given books at the
beginning of their ministry. Name one of them: Moses, Lehi, John,
Ezekiel
and Joseph Smith.
400 Elder DeHoyos spoke about a condition of the soul, that was a
result
of righteous living. What was his subject? Happiness.
500 Elder Scott spoke about something that helps all men distinguish
truth from error. He said it was not a person but a power and
influence.
What was he talking about? The Light of Christ
What did he say?
100 Elder Ballard said he had recently visited the refugee centers
from
hurricane Katrina as they tried to put their lives back together.
Their
stories and situations are tragic and poignant in many ways. They
lost
everything and needed food, help and medical attention but what were
they
most worried about? Their families - most were crying out for family
members who were missing.
200 Elder Ballard told us three main things and several other things
we
can do to protect our families and keep them close. Name one of
those
things: 1. Be consistent in holding daily family prayer and weekly
FHE. 2.
Teach the gospel in your home. Read the scriptures together. 3.
Create family bonds that are stronger than peers at school. Family
traditions, family policies and rules, simple family economy with
chores and
duties. Teach importance of avoiding debt and earning, saving and
wisely
spending money. Learn responsibility for temporal and spiritual
self-reliance.
300 President Hinckley said he has seen the fulfillment (Fruition)
of
words spoken by Moroni on his first visit to Joseph Smith - a poor
farm boy
who had nothing. What was the prophecy found in JSH 1:33? Angel said
to him
"he was a messenger sent and God had a work for Joseph would do and
his name
had for Good and evil among all nations, kindred of tongues and be
spoken of
among all people."
400 L. Tom Perry spoke about the Book of Mormon. He said each time
we
read we should ask ourselves two questions. What was one of the
questions:
Why did writers chose these events to include in the record? What
value for
us today?
500 Elder Hales spoke about the apostasy and talked about many
people who
prepared the way for the restoration. Name one of those events or
people:
Tyndall, Luther, Calvin, Knox, printing press, Columbus, King Henry
VIII,
King James, Pilgrims, Roger Williams, Revolutionary War, Bill of
Rights - 15
years later, Joseph Smith was born.
What should we do?
100 Elder Holland spoke about making a choice that would give us
confidence in standing before of God. He said young women should
choose
something with the same care they choose their friends. What choice
did he
say you should be careful of? Choosing the clothing you wear. (He
went on
to make a special appeal to all young women in dressing for church
services
in our best attire, and not dress like we are on our way to the
beach.)
200 Elder Uchtdorf spoke on the difference between programs in the
church
and the core doctrines of the gospel. He told us to work on
developing the
attributes of Christ in our lives. He said we could not do that
without the
help of the Lord. Name one of the attributes he said we should work
on:
Christ Attributes: knowledge, humility, charity, love, obedience,
diligence,
faith and hope.
300 Elder Eyring said we cannot buy spiritual preparedness but there
were
four things we can do to be spiritually prepared to endure the
storms of
life ahead. Name one of the things he said that we should do: 1.
Feast
upon word of God. 2. Pray always.
3. Be a full tithe payer. 4. Be steady and consistent in
obedience!
400 Elder Grow told a story about Jesus, from Monterrey, Mexico who
at 18
saw a church group playing ball and wished he would be asked to join
a group
the group, but they never did. He said he knows now that he could
have
joined the church then and served a mission. Years later, he saw
other
missionaries and he gave them his address but they never came to his
home.
Three years later he was finally given a book of Mormon and taught
the
gospel. Finally, 12 years after first became aware of the church, he
and
his wife were baptized. Today Jesus serves as president of Monterrey
Temple. Elder Grow asked ourselves a question. What was that
question?
Who do you know who would respond to your invitation to read the
book of
Mormon?
500 Elder Nelson gave us a pattern to follow that he said is
significant.
He said that we needed to exercise faith, use repentance, build
testimony,
and have an enduring conversion and that would lead us to what? The
healing
power of the Lord.
Story Told
100 Elder Oaks told the story that just before Christmas when he was
a
deacon, his bishop asked him to help deliver baskets to widows. One
basket
remained which was for my mother. He didn't know why it would be for
my
mother. Why was he confused? She had never referred to herself as a
widow
and it was the first time it occurred to him that she was. She
always
referred to his father, who was dead, still their father and husband
it was
like he was just away for awhile.
200 President Monson told a story of when he was a mission president
in
Canada how two missionaries who knocked on the door of Mr. Pollard
in
Ontario, Canada. After hearing a discussion, Mr. Pollard offered a
prayer
that these two misguided young men would go home and not waste their
time
telling people of Canada about which they know so little and then
asked them
to leave and never come back. Tell the rest of the story of what did
the
missionaries do next? The junior companion said, when we left your
door,
you said we really didn't believe. I want to testify to you that I
know
Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, by inspiration he translated the
book of
Mormon and saw God and Jesus. The missionaries then departed. Pres.
Monson
said he heard Mr. Pollard in a testimony meeting. He said, that
evening
sleep would not come. Over and over he heard the words "Joseph Smith
was a
prophet of God, I know it, I know it." He telephoned the
missionaries using
their number and they returned and this time my wife and my family
joined in
discussion as earnest seekers of truth. We all embraced the gospel
of Jesus
Christ. Testimony of truth brought by those two missionaries.
300 Elder Snow told the story of Lehi's family traveling in the
wilderness and that they were given a tool to help them find the
more
fertile parts of the wilderness as they made their journey. It
worked
according to their faith, diligence an heed. What tool were they
given?
Liahona
400 Elder Wirthlin told the story a village that endured the
powerful
earthquake and tsunami in Dec. 2004. He said not one of these
people, the
Mulkens (sp), died even though their village destroyed. They were a
society
of fisherman. For over a 1000 of years their ancestors studied had
signs of
weather. They taught what to do when ocean receded, and warned that
when
that happened, the water would return and rise higher. When the old
village
leaders saw the signs, they warned the villagers. None of kids
believed
them. But one old man would not relent until they all followed what
instruction that we must also follow. What counsel were they given
that
Elder Wirthlin said prophets of all ages have warned us that we must
also
do? Depart from wickedness and move to higher ground.
500 Elder Soares told the story that just before his 12th birthday,
his
bishop taught how to receive priesthood. Then he gave him a from to
fill
out. What did he give him? Bishop gave him mission call papers. Rest
of
the story: He interviewed me twice a year until 19 and encouraged me
to
remain faithful. He kept missionary forms in his files and mentioned
them
on each interview.
Book of Mormon Scriptures
100 The General Primary President, Sister Lant, used 2 Nephi 4:15 as
the
basis of her talk. She loved that scripture because it taught her
three
thing we should do with the scriptures. Name one of them: Delight in
the
scriptures, ponder the scriptures including through prayer, and
learn
through them and teach our children.
200 Bishop McMullin spoke about calamities in the last day. He said
that
adversity was a part of Heavenly Father's plan for happiness for our
children, and schools us and helps us overcome our carnal nature and
strengthen the divine spark in us. If not for adversity, we would
not know
to choose liberty and the safety of Christ or the captivity of
Satan. What
SM did he then quote? 2 Ne 2:26-27
300 Elder Bateman quoted Alma 7:11-12 when he talked about how the
Savior
how power from his mortal mother to die and power from his father to
live.
He said his atonement was for each of us one by one and then through
this
scripture spoke on other ways the atonement helps us. Name one of
those
ways: Jesus took upon our sins, pains, afflictions and temptations,
sicknesses, death and infirmities so bowels filled with mercy.
400 Elder Nelson quoted 3 Nephi 9:13 where the Savior asked the
people
when he visited them if they would "return unto me, and repent of
your sins
and be converted so. . . The Savior could do what? That I may heal
you.
500 Elder Won Yong Ko spoke on sacrifice and said when we sacrifice,
we
can also feel joy. He then quoted Mosiah 2:24 who said that although
the
Lord requires us to do as he commanded, he also immediately blesses
us.
Because of that, we are always what? Indebted unto him and are and
will be
forever and ever.

Double Jeopardy
Funny Thing!
200 Elder Holland woke up one morning and realized something that
stunned
him so much he laid back down and put the covers over his head. What
was it
that hit him so hard? He realize that he now had a teenage
granddaughter.
400 President Hinckley said he recently traveled around the world,
25,000
miles. He dedicated the Nigeria temple. Then he traveled Newport
Beach
California for that temple and to Samoa, another 10,000 miles. What
did he
say next? I do not enjoy travel! My wish is to get out among our
people to
extend appreciation and encouragement and bear testimony of the
Lord's work.
600 Elder Holland talked about what the Book of Mormon calls vane
imaginations. He worried that some young women would need to have
something to compete with the media expectations around us. What did
he say
they needed? (if need a hint - parody taking from Lehi's dream) A
great and
spacious make up kit! Yet, he said, at the end of the day, still
people
mocking and pointing fingers because in the world, it will never be
enough.
800 Elder Sybrowski from the 70, said his family was reading in the
book
of Mormon and wife asked who was the man that went into the woods
and prayed
all day. She gave her kids a hint and said his name started with E.
What
did the two year old yell out from the corner of the room? NOS. They
didn't
know he was even paying attention.
1000 When Pres. Packer talked about the work to make the LDS version
of the
scriptures, he said that it took 12 years and 600 volunteers. When
they
asked once how the topical guide was coming, what is one of the
things he
was told? "We've been through heaven and hell, we're past love and
lust and
now are working on repentance."
Lists given
200 Pres. Packer gave us several reasons why he is optimistic about
how
through prophecy we are prepared for the future. Name one of the
things the
prophets and apostles he said have been put into place: LDS version
of the
scriptures, Book of Mormon subtitle and printed into many languages,
church
curriculum now based on scriptures and prophets teachings,
Proclamation to
the world, Living Christ, FHE, new missionary work emphasis on
teaching
with the spirit (and training missionaries to do so), seminary and
institute
teaching what is in the scriptures, more local priesthood
leadership, 122
temples and two more announced, new family history advances.
400 L. Tom Perry gave us a list of ten things that we can learn from
the
book of Mormon. Name one of those things: Cause and effect of war
and
under what conditions it is justified. Evils and dangers of secret
combinations. Reality of Satan and gives us indications of the
methods he
uses. Advises us in proper use of wealth. Plain and precious truths
of
gospel. Reality of Christ. Gathering of House of Israel in the last
days.
Purpose of missionary work. Warns of pride, procrastination,
hypocrisy,
chastity.
600 Elder Oaks talked about priesthood authority in the church and
in the
family. He listed five differences between the two. Name one of
those
differences:
1. Keys - all priesthood authority in the church functions under
those
who hold keys. In the family, a father with the priesthood functions
without the need to hold priesthood keys.
2. Geographic boundaries limit priesthood authority. Family
responsibilities are not dependent on where they reside.
3. Church callings temporary but family relationships permanent.
4. There is an initiation and termination of positions in the
church,
but family callings are permanent!
5. Government of the family is patriarchal but the church is
hierarchical. Partnership of husband and wife are equal partners.
Women
are not limited partners in that assignment.
800 Pres. Faust said that many of our beliefs are huge blockbusters
and
unique to our faith. He then listed seven things. Name one of those
beliefs:
1. God and his son are glorified personages. God and his son are
creator and we are created in God's image. We know this because of
first
vision.
2. Temple blessings seal husband and wife and children for eternity.
3. Every worth male member can hold and exercise priesthood of God
in
his family.
4. Scriptures include the book of Mormon, D&C and P of Great Price.
5. Living apostles and prophets speak the Lord's word today.
6. Gift of the HG is available to all members.
7. Ennobling of womanhood. Roles of women differ in natures than
men.
Women are endowed with a great responsibility of motherhood and
nurturing.
More opportunities come to women since 1842 when JS turned key in
their
behalf.
1000 President Monson spoke about the prophet Joseph Smith and
listed
several things that Joseph taught us by example. Name one of the
things he
listed: Be example he taught us: courage, faith, honesty, diligence,
missionary work, and love.
Words of our Prophet
200 On Sunday morning, President Hinckley said there was so much
meanness, abuse and intolerance and hatred in the world. He then
said there
was so great a need for repentance and what else, that was the
subject of
his talk? Forgiveness.
400 President Hinckley announced that we have a problem in the
church and
that the solution would soon be coming in using some complex
computer
technology. What is the problem? Duplication of temple work among
the many
temples and people from various nations all over the world.
600 Pres. Hinckley read to us a parable about forgiveness and told
us to
read and ponder it often. What was the parable? Luke 15, the
prodigal son.
800 President Hinckley said that many of our temples are operating
at
capacity and are very crowded, which is great. How many temples did
he say
were now in operation? 122 temples.
1000 What did President Hinckley announce would happen December 23rd
of
this year? He would go to the place of Joseph Smith's birth in
Vermont and
repeat what Joseph F. Smith did on December 23, 1905, a century ago
when he
dedicated the monument to mark place of his birth. He said, "When I
am in
Vermont, others of the GA will be here in the Conference Center. A
program
will be carried by satellite. Appropriate music and words of tribute
to
that great prophet. What the choir sang this morning will be but a
dress
rehearsal. We look forward to this and hope all will be with us."
General Authorities & Leaders
200 Name one of the two new apostles. David Bednar, Deiter Uchtdorf
400 Who is the acting president of the Quorum of the 12? Boyd K.
Packer
600 Name Pres. Hinckley's two counselors. Thomas S. Monson and James
E.
Faust
800 Where did Pres. Hinckley say he went on his mission 70 years
ago?
British Isles.
1000 What change did President Hinckley announce for stake
conferences?
Satellite transmissions for visiting general authorities.
By the Numbers
200 Elder Ballard said this is the tenth anniversary of what (which
he
spoke about)? The proclamation of the world on the family.
400 Pres. Monson said that this conference was the 42nd anniversary
of
being called to quorum of 12. What did he saw was one of his
favorite hymns
that was sung at his first meeting with the Quorum of the 12? Praise
to the
man
600 L. Tom Perry talked about Pres. Hinckley's challenge to us to
read 1
1/2 chapters a day to finish the book of Mormon by the end of the
year.
According to Elder Perry, what book should we be reading in right
now? We
should now be reading in the book of Alma between 4 and 12.
800 President Packer said the book of Mormon was now translated into
how
many languages? 106 languages (and 49 now underway).
1000 Elder Koelliker spoke of covenants and how Noah was given a
covenant
when the world was flooded He admonished us to be faithful to
covenants and
that temple building in our day is comparable to the feat of what
Noah was
asked to do. He then said that in the past 7 years, how many temples
have
been dedicated? 71
FINAL JEOPARDY: (Each team pick amount of points and then writes
down
answer).
President Hinckley said that temples are crowded to capacity. He
said last
year more temple ordinances were performed in temples around that
world
than any previous year. To the nearest million, how many ordinances
were
performed in the temples? 32 Million ordinances
