Meridian Magazine in an article called "Follow the Prophet"
provided
links that make it easy to contact your
Senators about the Marriage Amendment. Please do take the time
to
do this! As was said, it is highly unusual for the First
Presidency
to take a stand on something political. Let us go out in great
numbers and let our voices be heard in support of marriage!

"It is rare, perhaps unprecedented, for the First Presidency to
ask
members of the Church to contact their elected officials about
an
upcoming vote in the United States Senate. The Church usually
teaches correct principles and then asks that members become
anxiously engaged on their own to protect and defend moral
principles in the public square.
"However, this time it is different - and we can assume that it
is
because the stakes are so high. In the Family: A Proclamation to
the World, we are particularly told:
"We warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon
individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by
ancient and modern prophets.
"We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government
everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and
strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society."
"Thus, a letter from the First Presidency was read in wards
across
the United States on Sunday, urging members to contact their
senators and ask for their support on the upcoming vote on the
Marriage Protection Amendment. The vote is expected to be held
in
the Senate on June 6, 2006."
This post is from the
SaintsandScholars list:
Elder L. Tom Perry spoke was at our ward
yesterday... he usually
attends his own ward, which happens to meet in our
building...
and he spoke to us for a few moments about the First
Presidency
announcement, which should have been read in
everyone's sacrament
meetings. For those who didn't hear it, the letter
says that the
Senate is set to vote on the Marriage Protection
Amendment to the
Constitution on June 7. We are urged us to contact
our Senators and
let them know how we feel about the matter. The
letter went on to
quote part of The Family: A Proclamation to the
World.
Anyway, Elder Perry talked of how back East the
Roman Catholic church had to close their adoption
facilities because
they refused to let children be adopted to same-sex
couples. He urged
each and every one of us to write our government
officials
***this very week***
and let them know our views. He seemed to suggest
this could
happen anywhere, including here in SLC, and
suggested
if things keep going as they have been, laws
could affect what happens in LDS temples! He said
it's
time to stand up and be counted... take a stand!
I didn't quite understand how the laws could effect
what happens
within the walls of temples... I have a feeling I
know what he's talking
about, but I'm not going to elaborate because I
don't know for sure and
I don't wish to put words in his mouth... However,
suffice it to say...
write your senators! Laura

Marriage Protection Amendment is available at www.senate.gov:
`Article--
`SECTION 1. This article may be cited as the `Marriage
Protection
Amendment'.
`SECTION 2. Marriage in the United States shall consist only of
the
union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the
constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that
marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any
union other than the union of a man and a woman.'.
The Senators from Utah voted last summer to bring this amendment
under consideration and Senator Hatch is a co-sponsor of the
bill. Please contact your elected officials and let them know
what you believe. The best way to get results is through high
volume via e-mail, phone and letter. We are going to do all
three as well as spread the word."
