This book, A Standard Unto My People, has been written for everyone who, with good intentions, has started at least 57 times reading those famous words, "I Nephi, having been born of goodly parents. . ." This book is a different and fun approach to the study of and teaching of the Book of Mormon. It approaches gospel topics, beginning with basic concepts, and builds to motivating conclusions. This book was begun as a way to teach our children the doctrinal concepts addressed in the Book of Mormon. While we believe the historical content of the Book of Mormon is important, and the story line is essential to understand, it is also our firm conviction that the real purpose of the Book of Mormon is to help us all understand the doctrinal concepts of the gospel of Jesus Christ. While the primary reason for the compilation of these ideas was for the teaching of our own children, we know that the concepts herein are also of use and benefit for other parents, missionaries, home teachers, visiting teachers, and indeed for anyone who desires to understand and be able to teach the principles of the gospel of Christ as recorded by the prophets in the Book of Mormon. The concepts in the study guide did not originate with us, but rather represent our attempt to expand two great volumes that precede this book, A Doctrinal Approach To The Book Of Mormon, and Building Faith With The Book Of Mormon. Both books were written by Reid E. Bankhead and Glenn L. Pearson. These two books have helped us immeasurably in understanding the teachings of the prophets. We want to be quick to point out that this book is our interpretation of some of the concepts authored by Reid E. Bankhead and Glenn L. Pearson. Accordingly, mistakes or misapplication of concepts expressed by us are our fault and not the responsibility of either Reid E. Bankhead or Glenn L. Pearson. Accordingly, it is for the following reasons that we are sharing these concepts: First:
To help each individual (especially missionaries) who
work with this guide and the Book of Mormon to better
understand, comprehend, and teach gospel principles. It is our hope and prayer that this book will help you, the reader, to come closer to Christ so you can help others to do the same. ~~Robert E. and Sandra L. Hales~~
