Jack Monnett

Jack Monnett holds degrees in education from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah in the Foundations of Education, where he specialized in the historical approach to formal education taken by the LDS Church.  He is the author of Revealed Educational Principles and the Public Schools - a former "Book of the Year" from the LDS-Home Education Association, and a book that Dr. W. Cleon Skousen has called the "best history" of Latter-day Saint education.  Dr. Monnett is the owner of Archive Publishers which specializes in reprints of rare and out of print writings from the early history of the church, and has lectured to home schooling groups throughout the United States.

Why are we homeschooling?  Just to do better what the public schools are already doing?  Throughout the scriptures and LDS Church history we receive a much broader picture of education.  Yes, academics are important - but the way they are taught is much more important.  And if the goal of education is to teach and cultivate Saints - shouldn't it entail much more?

An understanding of the past - especially the Church's revealed past - helps us to place "today" in perspective.  Where are we going?  Why?  How can we recapture the educational ideals outlined in the scriptures and encouraged by early prophets and church leaders?  Knowing the past gives us both an anchor as well as direction.
